Annie has written seven books for children on how to play the ukulele and lives in Minneapolis, MN with her two kids, dog and three chickens!

This lesson will connect your ukulele lesson planning and approach to the concepts of youth development and developmental stages of youth.

The five key areas of Positive Youth Development (PYD) are:

The stages of youth development look at common characteristics and developmental needs of our students at the different ages they interact with music education.

Stages of Development & Music Education

This lesson dives deeper into brain research and the relationship between music lessons and brain development.

  • We will learn about executive functions and how they interact with music lessons.

  • We will learn about additional brain functions that are enhanced by music instruction.

  • We will apply these concepts to our teaching to increase our impact on our student’s development.

Brain Research and Music Education

This lesson explores the importance of developing audiation skills in our students as a way to develop a deep understanding of music and a sense of competence.

Learning Targets:

  1. Understand the definition of audiation

  2. Understand and apply the first three types of audiation

  3. Learn strategies for incorporating audiation in our music lessons.

Audiation

This lesson tackles rhythm and using movement & games to develop:

  • a deep understanding of note values

  • singing while strumming

  • keeping a steady beat

  • feeling the beats to keep a consistent tempo

  • having fun during lessons with movement and play

Movement & Rhythm

This lesson explores the importance of teaching music notation to our ukulele students, instead of just TAB.

Learning Targets:

  1. Understand the importance of learning music notation

  2. Understand the history of music notation

  3. Learn strategies for teaching music notation effectively.

Teaching Music Notation

Songwriting is the perfect place to practice and reinforce skills while giving your students an opportunity to develop their own songs and music.

This lesson will review how to incorporate songwriting into your private or group lessons.
